Responding to the new Brexit deal proposed by the UK government and the EU negotiators, Catherine Rowett MEP (Green Party MEP for the East of England) said:
“This half-baked set of proposals benefits neither side. As the revised agreement document and the accompanying updated political declaration receive more scrutiny it only serves to reinforce what we in the Green Party have been saying for years – that the best deal we will get is the one we have now, which means staying in Europe.
“Quite simply this rushed deal, that seems to have been hastily finalised in the early hours this morning, is worse than the deal that Theresa May presented to parliament. Neither is a patch on the deal that we have right now, as full voting members of the European Union.
“If, however, Johnson and his allies think that they have found the perfect plan for our future, one that meets the expectations they raised in 2016, then let them ask the people to approve it. We need a period of time for public scrutiny of its shortcomings. The major failings and loopholes in this deal will be best explained by legal experts in proper political debate, so as to bring the people with Parliament to a unified and informed consensus. There can be no recipe for restoring our community in rushing through a deal that no one has endorsed.”
