The Norwich to Newquay flight has been scrapped, just two months after it was announced to much fanfare.
Green Party MEP for the East of England, Catherine Rowett, said:
“Personally I am delighted—not, of course, that people may be losing jobs, and not at all that I’d want to discourage people from going on holiday in Cornwall, or for friends in the West Country to enjoy holidays in Norfolk. But neither holiday nor business travel should destroy the very natural environment on which our tourist economy and sustainable business projects depend. Domestic flights are an aberration in the fight against climate change. We do not need to live life at such a frenetic pace. Slow is often better for our relaxation and mental health.
“I would like to think that whoever takes up the reins of government next week will understand what’s driving us into the red on our carbon budget. Our new leaders must prioritise sustainable public transport, better train connections, and a swift end to the perennial expansion of aviation.”
