Catherine Rowett, the Green Party Member of the European Parliament for the East of England, will tonight be speaking at an anti-Brexit event at the Harpenden Public Halls in Harpenden.
The discussion entitled “So, what does No Deal mean for us?”, organised by Harpenden for Europe, will focus on what the consequences of a No Deal Brexit would be for the local community.
St Albans (the district in which Harpenden is located) voted heavily for remain in 2016. 37.3% voted leave and 62.7% for remain – the second highest proportion of remain voters in the East of England after Cambridge.
Speaking before the event, Catherine Rowett MEP reiterated her calls for Boris Johnson to resign:
“It has been another tumultuous week in British politics. We have seen the Supreme Court unanimously find that the government acted illegally to undermine our democracy. This alone showed that Boris Johnson is unfit to hold the office of Prime Minister. However, upon returning to Parliament, rather than acting with humility, he instead behaved disgracefully, using rhetoric that incites hatred and sows division in our communities. He should resign immediately.”
Catherine Rowett continued:
“The issue of Brexit is likely to haunt the British political narrative for decades to come. At the end of this, we have to come back together as a country. Personally, I’d like us to move on to the urgent business of solving the problems for the region. To that end I will continue working in Brussels for the best interests of our country and the planet.”
