As a Member of the European Parliament (MEP), Catherine Rowett represented Green voters and remain voters from the East of England in debates and legislative work at the heart of the European Union. The European Parliament makes laws and provides regulatory systems and subsidies, incentives etc that crucially affect the UK and the Eastern region. These include regulations on trade, workers’ rights, transport, fisheries and agriculture.
MEPs also look after the interests of local and regional organisations, to ensure that the priorities set for funding, for projects in infrastructure, for research etc are directed to the things we most need, and help shape EU action on global issues such as climate change and peace. The Group of the Greens/EFA have a particularly good record of holding the EU to account when it fails to work for the good of the planet and of the people and animals of Europe.
